Close Up Interview With Artist Robert Luxford

Tell us a little about yourself and what you do

I am 60. I work full time as a signaller for Sydney trains. I am married, nearly 31 years. As well as being a comic book artist, I am also an actor, writer, producer, director, researcher of theatre and film. I am also a martial artist, an amateur astronomer, and a member of Animals Australia.

Where do you get your inspiration from when you draw?

I am a big fan of Science Fiction and fantasy.

Tell us about your very first job and what path have you taken since then?

I have a number of creative interest (see above list) As an artist my first gig was doing drawings and selling them at supanova.

Cyborg

As an artist, what is your biggest frustration?

Not having a big enough market.

Tell us about how you prioritise your art?

Story, images, layout,

How do you connect with other artists, and your customers (i.e. how do you network)?

I sell my comics and artwork online and at conventions such as Supanova. I am a member of the Sydney Comics guild.

Quantum Witch

Your advice to artist who are just starting out?

You should learn the rules before you set out to break them.

Tell us about your up coming SCG Group art exhibition Art at ArtSHINE Gallery?

The pictures that will be displayed are from my latest comic Fantastic Chronicles #2 The Quantum witch. The main picture is the lead character, Victoria Romanovski. The smaller ones illustrate the process, from initial wirework, to rendering, to final posing and lighting.

Enemy Poster

What is your proudest moment so far?

At one of my first Supanova conventions I gave a young girl one of my prints for free, because she was buying a present for her brother, who was in hospital with a terminal illness. I later learned he loved the picture so much he kept it above his hospital bed the entire time he was there and showed everyone who visited him.

Who do you most want to meet and why?

Alex Ross. I like his technique.

What is the most important lesson in life that you have learned?

It’s not about you, it’s what you can do.
