Close Up interview with Artist David Hayden

David Hayden

Tell us a little about yourself and what you do.

Hi I’m David Hayden I’m originally from Adelaide ,and moved to Sydney in 2000.
I have worked in a wide range of industries which included Mining and Exploration, Horticulture and Landscape Gardening, Property Development, Marketing and IT Businesses.
I started painting in the late 90s in traditional watercolour and studied with well known Adelaide water colourists Brian Dobson and Arthur Phillips. I then developed  my own style in the Abstract Watercolour genre.

In 2013 I became interested in  Sculpture and Installation Works which i made and exhibited in large scale. In 2015 I decide to change direction and move to developing a signature style of small scale Mini Sculptures which I found more interesting,e xciting and challenging. I still continue to paint abstract watercolours when I want a break from my Sculpture work

Where do you get your inspiration from when you create?

My inspiration comes very early in the creative process it’s actually when I go out hunting and searching for materials to work with that I feel have some uniqueness. I may head off to the beach to look for some interesting rocks or other found natural or man made objects . Or maybe just drop into some bric brac shops or markets to find some interesting items I can work with …..So that’s my starting point. Some pieces just don’t always work at the time but I’ll keep them anyway for some other work later on ……
