Is it your dream and ambition to get back to nature and start a farming business?
Late last year, we visited one of our client who had made a lifestyle change and purchased a farm in Nowra.
There are many opportunities in the farming sector, so you should go for it. But there are some things that you will need to know about before you get started.
Identify Your Market
The first thing you need to do is plan exactly what you want to do with your farming business. Do you want to raise livestock and sell the byproducts such as eggs and milk? Or do you want to raise animals for slaughter and sell the meat? You might not want to raise livestock at all. You could grow crops instead. There are many options, and there is plenty of scope for putting a new spin on an older idea if that’s what you want to do. It can be a lot of fun, but you do need to keep an eye on the market. Make sure you know who you are going to sell to and how you are going to reach those target customers.
Use Experience Employees
When you start a farming business for the first time, you will want an experienced team around you. It can all be pretty complicated if you have no prior experience of working in the farming industry. So, you don’t want your employees to be complete novices as well. If you do that, you’ll be tripping up and making mistakes left, right and centre. So, make sure you hire people who have experience of working in the kind of business that you are looking to run. It could be the best move you make.
Invest in the Right Equipment
No farming company can succeed and thrive unless it is using the right equipment. Obviously, the kind of equipment you use will entirely depend on what kind of work you want to do. But those tractors, ploughs and other kinds of machinery don’t come cheap. Able Sales diesel generators might also be necessary if you’re working outdoors a lot. All of these expenses need to be taken into consideration before you get the business off the ground. You don’t want to be left short when the business is up and running.
Use the Land Correctly
You can’t just buy up a plot of land and then expect it to be used for exactly what you want it to be used for. This is not how farming works. There are many different types of land, and each is suited to a specific purpose. You have to choose the land depending on what you plan to do with it. If you are raising ducks, for example, the land will need to be near water and damp. If you are planning to grow crops, then it will require very different land. This is how it works, so you need to respect the basic rules of farming. It’s all about educating yourself and learning from people who have been doing the job for longer than you. It’s a pretty steep learning curve, and you will definitely make mistakes. But that doesn’t mean you can’t succeed at it.
