Many creative startups require space, or at the very least, want space, in order to execute their creative ideas and business objectives… yet, funding the bohemian lifestyle can be expensive, and therefore most startups are having to squeeze into smaller and smaller spaces.
If you’re budget isn’t limitless, to the point that you can hire a commercial construction company to create a bespoke space for you – then these tips are going to help you squeeze the most out of the smaller creative spaces most startups find necessary.
- LIGHT
The term “dark and dingy” tends to be associated with small spaces, whereas, in contrast to this the term “light and airy” relates to larger spaces. That said, there are plenty of smaller spaces that are filled with light that feel light and airy rather than dark and dingy – meaning as long as there is plenty of natural light, the space doesn’t have to feel claustrophobic and grim.
The key aspect to look for when searching for creative space, therefore, is that of light – large windows with whitewashed walls are ideal. That said, even if the space is dark, you can make use of mood lighting to create a warm and intimate atmosphere that some creatives work particularly well in.
- UNCLUTTERED
Clutter is your worst enemy when it comes to small spaces, as the more cluttered an office feels, the smaller the space will feel and actually become.
If you’re a creative working with materials, then it’s almost necessary to work in a somewhat cluttered environment – yet the less cluttered you can make it the better, meaning you will want to adopt or at least consider a more minimalist approach in terms of decoration and perhaps employ a clear desk policy so you don’t feel too boxed in.
- COOL
In addition to the space feeling light and airy you want it to be cool, in terms of temperature, as when spaces get hot and stuffy people lose concentration and get agitated. Heat is also something that makes people feel quite tired, as it drains their energy, meaning the cooler the space the better.
That said, there is a limit to this, as nobody enjoys working in a fridge-like environment and if you do have air conditioning in place, make sure it isn’t turned on so high that people feel the need to bring a winter coat into work with them.
The best thing you can hope for is a space with large windows that let in a lot of light, but also a lot of fresh air, as if the windows don’t open you are essentially creating a greenhouse for your employees that will act like a sweatbox.
In summary, there’s a good chance you’re going to have to deal with a cramped space in the early days but there are things you can do to make it feel less cramped; such as to bring in more natural light, fresh air, and keep the environment clutter free.
