11 ways to a great art blog

The secret of a great art blog is keeping the reader – art lover or non-art ‘enthusiast’ – engaged in the journey of the writing. So here’s 11 top tips to get your writing the attention it really deserves:

Slim lines

Chop your chunky paragraphs into easily digestible morsels so the reader has the palate to understand what your driving at. Faster reading for those with a short attention span is critical to keep them engaged.

Pack punch

Ensure you pack enough power and authority with lightning fast phrases and text to keep the reader from falling asleep.

Start, middle and end

Every article has one. A continuous circle that keeps the reader satisfied. Plan your article with a punchy opener, trimmed down middle, and a bang of an end that will have the reader logging on for more.

All present and correct

The presentation of the article is just as important as what you plan to say. So make sure your text is readable, keep text colour to a minimum as it will put people off from the actual message you are trying to deliver and keep page width tight.

Change the flow

Mix it up. Subtle use of slowing the text down with words will help slow the reader down and grab their attention span with a morsel of information rather than a bullet train ride through something they instantly forget. Remember you decide it’s speed and flow.

Adopt your style – and stick to it

Your style is really your ID in a world of a million art bloggers with something to say. So make it bold, sassy and brassy, and with a hint of humour. Raising a smile on the lips of a reader in their darkest day, will bring them back for more. And if you get the style, keep it.

Blog bore or art?

Most blogs I read, I have to admit, I end up skipping and racing down to the end. So with yours covering art, you need your prose – your words – to be as colourful as the art itself – not too much, but enough to lift it from the monochrome.

Heads up!

To break the copy flow, it’s a good idea to use sub headings to give readers a ‘skeleton’ of the article and where they can drop off and pick it up again.

Bullet and bold

The trick for bullet points and using bold to accentuate thoughts is when to use them. Splitting copy in a mishmash will leave the copy jarring. Your flow needs to be like water – clear and seamless.

Images

Images give natural breaks in a blog but also help attract your readers’ attention. For art blogs, they’re  a MUST! So use them wisely.

Feedback

As an artist, as a blogger, you invite adoration and criticism with your creations. So seek out readers thoughts on your blogs, bring them in and make the blogging experience interactive.

Good luck!
