Your employees are the major driving force behind your business. Without them, chances are you would have little success to speak of. For that reason, it is important to keep them as engaged and motivated as possible. This can be more difficult than it might at first appear. Keeping their spirits up day in, day out, can be somewhat exhausting. However, there are certain tried-and-tested techniques any business owner can use. These are methods which are guaranteed to stop your staff from flagging. If you have started to notice that productivity is decreasing significantly come the end of the week, then read on.
Here are our top tips for keeping your people motivated in the workplace.
Have Different Kinds of Workspace
It is important to remember that your employees are all different; they are, after all, individuals. Many employers make the mistake of assuming that everybody thrives best in an open-place office. However, this is not necessarily so. There are many people who do their best work when they are given sufficient time alone. That’s why you are more likely to keep a higher percentage of your staff motivated if you plan your office so that it has different kinds of workspace. Ensure that, as well as open-plan, you also have cubicles – and even separate rooms. If a member of your team feels that they need to be alone in order to do their best work, then allow them that privilege.
Equip Your Break Room Well
Just as important as the workspace are the areas specifically designed not for work. The break room is a vital part of proceedings. Having a decent colleague area can often mean the difference between happy employees and disgruntled ones. And that is a main contributing factor towards the success of the company. Ensure that you are providing everything that might be desired – tea, Peaberry’s Coffee, snacks. And it is always worth investing in a microwave and a refrigerator. In general, the more amenities you provide, the better.
Communicate Fully & Often
Any business owner worth their salt should know the overbearing importance of communication. The most important aspects of communication are efficiency and rate. In other words, you need to communicate with your staff clearly and often. Communication which is lacking in clarity is not communication. Likewise, you need to keep communicating often so that your staff know that you know what’s going on. There is nothing worse than a manager who doesn’t appear to know what is happening within their own business.
Get Everybody Involved
The most important thing to remember, however, is to keep everybody involved. In an ideal world, you should be treating your company like a democracy. Ultimately, the decisions are down to you. But the more you seek the advice and opinions of your staff, the better. They will feel valued, and therefore happier to be part of the team. In return, you might just receive some very useful ideas which your business can implement going forward. Having a democratic approach to business matters is in the interest of everybody.
