We make commitments to lots of things everyday don’t we?
We commit to business, to work, projects, people, and causes.
Commitment means staying loyal to what you said you were going to do. When we commit to something we are giving our vow. We become accountable for the promises we make, and the words we speak. Our words create the target for our action.
“Our Commitment lets us move into action.
Our Discipline enables us to follow through
on what we promised to ourselves and to others”
~ Vinh Van Lam
Our words are powerful, and the clarity of our words are critical. What we say can change the way we feel about ourselves, and about others.
The key to making a commitment is to write it down on paper. Here at ArtSHINE we always advise our clients to set goals, writing them down on a goal planner.
Let’s take a look at some of the examples…
Compare these two statements:
“I am painting a series of artworks for my next exhibition and I will finish the series by April 30th”
versus
“I am planning to painting something soon for my art exhibition.”
The first statement probably gave you better feeling of being more aware and committed. Notice the difference you feel in your stomach when you said it. You felt something right?
The second statement probably did not give you the same sense as it is not specific enough to give you a real sense of commitment. In other words you’ll do it whenever… and that is not a commitment, it’s more likely an interest. When you are interested in doing something, you do it only when it suits you as opposed to when you are committed to something, you accept no excuses; only actions and results.
Here are two more examples:
“I am committed to sell $50,000 of my Winter 2014 Collections in the next 6 months”
versus
“I would like to sell more of my Winter Collection in a couple of months time.”
Notice the difference between the two?
Isn’t it interesting?
How we use our words has a huge impact on our thoughts and actions.
While our words are important, it’s in action we demonstrate our true commitment.
However you hold yourself accountable and set concrete commitments, the best method is to write it all down on your goal planner .
Our clients at ArtSHINE use the OPIC planner to set goals and plan their action steps. They use the planner to track their progress and stick to the commitments they set.
What commitments are you living right now in your Art & Design Practice?
Do you stick to your commitments? And most importantly, have you followed through your promises to yourself and to others?
Take the time to look at what you are doing right now.
Remember, it’s important to pause, refresh, have a breather, and review your goals and commitments for the year.
In the actions you take now, your commitment will be revealed.
