Live Your Purpose, Not the Purpose Other People Want for You

Many creative people spend years trying to become what other people expect.
They are told to get a “safe” job.
They are told art is only a hobby.
They are told creativity is not a real career.
They are told to be practical, sensible, quiet, and realistic.
Sometimes this advice comes from people who love us. Sometimes it comes from people who are afraid for us. Sometimes it comes from people who simply do not understand the creative path.
But there comes a time when every artist, designer, writer, photographer, maker, musician, or creative person must ask:
Am I living my purpose?
Or am I living the purpose other people chose for me?
This is not always an easy question.
Purpose is personal.
It is not something another person can hand to you. It is not something your family, your school, your workplace, your community, or society can fully decide for you.
They may guide you.
They may influence you.
They may teach you.
But they cannot live your life for you.
Only you can do that.
For many creatives, the journey begins quietly.
A sketch in a notebook.
A song written in private.
A photo taken on a walk.
A pattern designed after work.
A story saved in a folder.
A dream carried for years.
At first, it may not look like a career. It may not look serious to other people. It may not even look important.
But inside you, it means something.
It gives you energy.
It helps you feel alive.
It reminds you who you are.
That is where purpose often begins.
Purpose does not always arrive loudly. Sometimes it whispers. Sometimes it waits patiently while you are busy surviving, working, caring for others, or trying to meet expectations.
But it does not disappear.
It keeps calling you back.
When you ignore your purpose for too long, something inside you feels unsettled. You may be successful on the outside, but disconnected on the inside. You may be doing what everyone expected, but still feel something is missing.
That missing piece is often your own voice.
Your own dream.
Your own creative truth.
Living your purpose does not mean being careless or irresponsible. It does not mean quitting everything overnight. It does not mean ignoring bills, family, or real-life responsibilities.
It means making space for what matters to you.
It means taking your creative gift seriously.
It means building step by step.
It means learning, practising, improving, sharing, and growing.
It means choosing a path that reflects who you truly are.
As creatives, we need to remember that our work is not only about making beautiful things.
Art can heal.
Design can connect.
Writing can give language to feelings.
Photography can preserve memory.
Music can lift people.
Stories can help others feel less alone.
Your creativity has value because it carries part of you.
When you live someone else’s purpose, your creative light becomes smaller. You may still function. You may still achieve things. But you are not fully present in your own life.
When you live your own purpose, you begin to create from a deeper place.
You become more honest.
More grounded.
More courageous.
More useful to others.
This is especially important in a creative community.
A strong creative community is not built by people copying each other. It is built by people honouring their own voice while supporting the voices of others.
Your purpose does not need to look like anyone else’s.
One artist may want to exhibit in galleries.
Another may want to license patterns for products.
Another may want to teach.
Another may want to write books.
Another may want to build a small handmade business.
Another may simply want to create work that brings joy and meaning.
None of these paths is better than the other.
The right path is the one that is true to you.
Sometimes people will not understand your purpose until they see the results. Sometimes they may never understand it at all.
That is okay.
Your purpose does not need everyone’s approval before it becomes valid.
You do not need permission to begin.
You do not need to wait until everything is perfect.
You do not need to become someone else to be accepted.
You only need to take the next honest step.
Create the work.
Write the story.
Share the idea.
Learn the skill.
Ask for help.
Join the community.
Keep going.
The creative path is not always easy, but it is deeply meaningful when it belongs to you.
So ask yourself today:
What part of my purpose have I been hiding?
What dream have I placed on hold because someone else did not understand it?
What small step can I take this week to return to myself?
You were not born to live a life designed only by other people’s fears, expectations, or opinions.
You were born to discover what is meaningful to you and to bring that meaning into the world.
Live your purpose.
Not the purpose other people want for you.
Because when you honour your creative calling, you do not only become a better artist.
You become a more authentic human being.
And that authenticity is one of the greatest gifts you can give to your community.
