It Was Never About Where I Came From

Growing up, I often felt like I belonged between worlds.

Some people thought I was too much of one thing.

Others thought I was not enough of another.

No matter where I stood, there always seemed to be someone ready to tell me what I should be, how I should act, what I should value, or where I belonged.

For many years, I thought I had to choose.

I thought I had to fit neatly into a box that made other people comfortable.

I tried to meet expectations.

I tried to explain myself.

I tried to prove that I belonged.

But the harder I tried, the more exhausted I became.

Eventually, I realised something important.

It was never about choosing sides.

It was never about fitting into someone else’s definition of who I should be.

It was about deciding for myself who I am.

That sounds simple, but it is one of the hardest lessons many people will ever learn.

We spend so much of our lives being influenced by family, culture, friends, schools, workplaces, social media, and society. Everyone has opinions about how we should live, what success looks like, what is acceptable, and what is not.

Sometimes those influences are helpful.

Sometimes they are not.

The challenge is learning which voices deserve a place in your life and which ones do not.

There comes a moment when every person must ask:

Who am I when nobody else is deciding for me?

Who do I want to become?

What values matter most to me?

What kind of life do I want to build?

The answers to those questions rarely come from the outside.

They come from within.

For me, identity became less about labels and more about values.

Less about categories and more about character.

Less about where I came from and more about how I chose to live.

I realised I could honour my past without being trapped by it.

I could appreciate different parts of my journey without allowing any single part to define me completely.

I could learn from many influences and still create my own path.

That realisation was incredibly freeing.

Because once you stop trying to fit into someone else’s expectations, you create space to become your authentic self.

You stop performing.

You stop pretending.

You stop seeking permission.

Instead, you begin making choices based on your own values, beliefs, dreams, and experiences.

You become comfortable with complexity.

You understand that human beings are not one-dimensional.

We are shaped by our families, our communities, our experiences, our struggles, our successes, our travels, our friendships, our failures, and our hopes.

We are not a single label.

We are a collection of stories.

And those stories continue to evolve throughout our lives.

The older I become, the less interested I am in fitting into categories.

I am more interested in becoming a better human being.

More compassionate.

More understanding.

More curious.

More open-minded.

More willing to learn.

More willing to grow.

Because at the end of the day, people may always have opinions about who you should be.

Some will say you are too much.

Others will say you are not enough.

Some will try to place you in a box because it helps them make sense of the world.

But your life is not theirs to define.

Your identity is not theirs to decide.

Your future is not theirs to write.

That responsibility belongs to you.

Perhaps the greatest freedom in life is realising that you do not need to become who others expect you to be.

You simply need the courage to become who you were meant to be.

Not according to someone else’s definition.

But according to your own.

Because true belonging does not come from fitting in.

It comes from accepting yourself.

And once you do that, you no longer spend your life trying to find where you belong.

You begin creating a place where you can simply be yourself.
