Keep Going and Keep Showing Up: Dreams Need Action to Become Real
Many people have dreams.
They dream about becoming an artist.
They dream about writing a book.
They dream about launching a collection.
They dream about licensing their artwork.
They dream about exhibiting in a gallery.
They dream about creating music, starting a creative business, or finally doing the thing that has been sitting quietly in their heart for years.
Dreaming is beautiful.
However, dreaming alone is not enough.
There is a big difference between people who dream about something and people who do something about it.
We often hear people say they want to win the lottery. They talk about what they would do with the money.
They imagine the house, the travel, the freedom, and the new life.
But then you ask them, “Did you buy a ticket?”
And they say, “No.”
That is the problem.
You cannot win a lottery you never enter.
You cannot get picked for an opportunity you never apply for.
You cannot sell artwork that no one sees.
You cannot build a creative career if you never show up for it.
This does not mean success is easy. It does not mean every action will bring instant results. But it does mean that nothing can grow if you never plant the seed.
Showing up is part of the creative work
For artists, surface designers, writers, photographers, musicians, and creative professionals, showing up is not only about making the work.
It is also about sharing the work.
It is about submitting the portfolio.
It is about entering the exhibition.
It is about sending the email.
It is about posting the artwork.
It is about attending the event.
It is about learning the business side.
It is about asking questions.
It is about trying again after rejection.
Many creatives wait until they feel ready.
They say:
“I will submit my work when my portfolio is better.”
“I will contact that client when I have more confidence.”
“I will start posting when my website is perfect.”
“I will launch the collection when everything is right.”
“I will join the program when I feel more prepared.”
However, the truth is, readiness often comes after action, not before it.
You become ready by doing.
You become stronger by practising.
You become clearer by participating.
You become more confident by showing up again and again.
Dreams need movement
A dream without action can become a heavy thing.
At first, it feels inspiring. Then, slowly, it can turn into frustration.
You may start asking yourself:
“Why is nothing happening for me?”
“Why do other people get opportunities?”
“Why am I still in the same place?”
But the honest question is:
“What have I done to move closer to the dream?”
This is not about blaming yourself. It is about taking responsibility with kindness.
Sometimes, we love the dream, but we avoid the discomfort that comes with it.
We avoid the risk.
We avoid the rejection.
We avoid being seen.
We avoid learning something new.
We avoid the possibility that our first attempt may not be perfect.
But every creative path asks something from us.
It asks us to participate.
You do not need to be perfect to begin
One of the biggest mistakes creatives make is believing they must be perfect before they show up.
But no artist starts with a perfect body of work.
No writer starts with a perfect manuscript.
No designer starts with a perfect portfolio.
No musician starts with a perfect song.
No business owner starts with everything fully worked out.
Growth comes from doing the work, receiving feedback, making changes, and continuing.
Your first submission may not lead to a licensing deal.
Your first exhibition application may not be accepted.
Your first collection may not sell.
Your first post may not get much attention.
That does not mean you have failed.
It means you have started.
And starting matters.
Every action gives you information. Every step teaches you something. Every attempt helps you understand your work, your audience, your market, and yourself.
Keep going, even when results are slow
In the creative industry, results often take time.
Sometimes, an opportunity comes months or even years after the first conversation. Sometimes, an artwork that did not sell in one place becomes perfect for another.
Sometimes, a collection that was rejected by one buyer may be exactly what another buyer is looking for.
That is why consistency matters.
Keep making.
Keep learning.
Keep submitting.
Keep improving.
Keep connecting.
Keep showing up.
Not every door will open. But the more you show up, the more doors you give yourself a chance to find.
If you disappear every time
something feels hard, people cannot remember you. Opportunities cannot find you. Your work cannot grow in the world.
Showing up does not mean forcing yourself until you burn out. It means building a steady rhythm that keeps your dream alive.
Small steps are still steps.
One artwork.
One email.
One portfolio update.
One conversation.
One application.
One social media post.
One new skill.
One brave decision.
Over time, these small actions become momentum.
Participation creates possibility
The person who buys the lottery ticket may not win.
But the person who never buys the ticket has no chance at all.
It is the same in your creative career.
The artist who submits their work may not get selected.
But the artist who never submits has already closed the door.
The surface designer who sends their portfolio may not hear back.
But the designer who keeps the folder hidden on their computer will never know.
The writer who shares their story may receive criticism.
But the writer who never shares may never reach the reader who needed those words.
The musician who releases a song may not become famous overnight.
But the musician who keeps every song unfinished will never build an audience.
Action does not guarantee success.
But no action almost guarantees staying where you are.
Your dream deserves your participation
A creative dream is not something you admire from far away.
It is something you must meet with your effort.
If your dream matters to you, show up for it.
Show up when you feel confident.
Show up when you feel unsure.
Show up when the results are slow.
Show up when you need to learn.
Show up when the first answer is no.
Show up when you need to begin again.
Because every time you show up, you are telling your dream:
“I am still here.”
“I still believe in you.”
“I am willing to do the work.”
“I am not just dreaming. I am participating.”
And that is powerful.

Final thought

There is nothing wrong with dreaming. Dreams give us hope, direction, and purpose.
But dreams also need hands.
They need feet.
They need courage.
They need action.
So keep going.
Keep showing up.
Keep taking the next step.
Because the creative life does not belong only to those who dream about it.
It belongs to those who participate.
