For many of us, we were taught a very simple version of life.
Go to school.
Get a job.
Work Monday to Friday.
Stay in one lane.
Go to bed early.
Do what is expected.
Do not ask for too much.
Do not dream too loudly.
For a long time, this was seen as the “right” way to live.
However, life is not one straight road. Also, creativity is not a factory line. We are not all made the same way. We do not all think the same way. We do not all dream the same dreams.
So why should we be expected to live the same life?
As creatives, and as human beings, we need to understand something important:
It is okay to have more than one passion.
In fact, having multiple passions can make you a richer, deeper, and more interesting person. It can make your creative work stronger. It can help you see the world from many angles. It can also help you build a life that feels more honest and alive.
There Is No Cookie-Cutter Path in the Creative World
The old idea says you must choose one thing and stay with it forever.
But the creative world does not work like that.
An artist may also be a writer.
A designer may also love music.
A photographer may also enjoy gardening, cooking, teaching, or science.
A business owner may also be a poet, a painter, or a singer.
One passion does not cancel another passion. Sometimes, one passion feeds the other.
Your love for music may help your art carry rhythm.
Your love for language may help you tell better stories.
Your love for science may help you understand colour, structure, pattern, and nature.
Your love for business may help you turn your creativity into something sustainable.
Therefore, having many passions is not a weakness. It can be your strength.
The problem is not having too many passions. The problem is when we are told to hide them.
We Were Not Born to Fit Into One Small Box
When I look back at my own life, I can see that I was never a person with only one passion.
Growing up, I loved art and design. I also loved languages, music, and science, especially chemistry and biology. These interests may seem very different, but to me, they were all connected.
Art helped me express feeling.
Design helped me understand beauty and structure.
Language helped me tell stories.
Music helped me feel emotion deeply.
Science helped me understand life, nature, and how things work.
Then, during my college life, I studied business. However, I never stopped practising art, design, and music. They were still part of me.
This is something many creatives understand. You may follow one practical path, but another part of you keeps calling. You may work in one industry, but your heart is still painting, writing, singing, designing, or dreaming in the background.
That calling does not disappear. It waits.
ArtSHINE Was Born From Passion
Over 20 years ago, I decided to focus more deeply on art, design, and writing.
ArtSHINE did not begin as a big company. It began from something very simple — a Blogspot blog. I started writing and sharing ideas. I wanted to support artists and designers. I wanted to help creatives understand the business side of their work. I wanted to shine a spotlight on people who deserved to be seen.
Over time, that simple blog grew.
My writing grew.
The community grew.
The readership grew to reach millions annually.
The mission became clearer.
ArtSHINE was born from passion. Not from a perfect plan. Not from a straight road. Not from following what other people told me I should do.
It came from listening to the different parts of myself and allowing them to work together.
My passion for art and design led me to work with artists, surface designers, photographers, and creative entrepreneurs. My passion for writing helped me share stories and lessons. My business background helped me build structure. My belief in people helped me keep going.
All these passions came together.
That is the beauty of having more than one passion. You may not see the connection at first. However, one day, they may form something meaningful.
Music Became Another Chapter
About four years ago, I decided to follow another passion more seriously — music.
I have always loved creating lyrics. Some ideas had been with me for many years, even from my school days. However, after my parents passed away nearly two years ago, music became more important to me.
Grief changes you. It opens a different door in your heart. It makes you remember what matters. It also reminds you that life is not forever.
So I began to focus more on music. This became the beginning of ArtSHINE Music.
In June 2025, I decided to create a music studio and work with singers and musicians to bring the lyrics I had written over many years to life.
Again, this was not a separate life. It was part of the same journey.
Art, design, writing, coaching, business, community, and music — they all became part of one larger creative story.
Do Not Let Other People Limit Your Life
Why am I sharing this?
Because too many people are told they must choose only one passion.
Sometimes, the people around you may tell you to be realistic. They may say, “Focus on one thing.” They may say, “Do not take the risk.” They may say, “You are doing too much.”
Sometimes, they say this because they care about you.
However, sometimes they say it because they are afraid. They may be playing safe. They may not have had the courage to follow their own passions. They may not understand your vision. They may even feel uncomfortable watching you grow.
But they are not you.
They do not carry your dreams.
They do not feel your calling.
They do not live inside your heart.
Therefore, you must be careful about who you allow to shape your future.
Advice can be useful. Guidance can be valuable. But you should not let another person’s fear become the fence around your life.
Multiple Passions Can Make You a Better Creative
Having more than one passion can help you become more flexible, more original, and more authentic.
When you bring different interests together, you create a voice that is uniquely yours.
This is especially important in the creative world. There is no cookie-cutter path. There is no one correct way to become an artist, designer, writer, musician, or creative business owner.
Some people begin early.
Some people begin later.
Some people change direction.
Some people return to an old dream.
Some people build slowly, step by step.
All of these paths are valid.
The most important thing is not whether your journey looks neat to other people. The most important thing is whether your journey feels true to you.
You Have Nothing to Lose and So Much to Gain
One of the messages behind the ArtSHINE anthem “Shine Anyway” is this:
You have nothing to lose, but so much to gain.
When you follow your passion, you may not know where it will lead. You may make mistakes. You may need to learn new skills. You may need to start small. You may feel afraid.
But starting small is still starting.
A blog can become a platform.
A sketch can become a collection.
A poem can become a song.
A hobby can become a business.
A quiet dream can become a movement.
So do not dismiss your passions just because they do not fit into someone else’s idea of success.
Your life belongs to you.
Final Reflection
It is okay to love more than one thing.
It is okay to be an artist and a writer.
It is okay to be a designer and a musician.
It is okay to be a business person and a dreamer.
It is okay to begin again.
It is okay to return to a passion you left behind many years ago.
You do not have to choose a small life just because it makes other people comfortable.
Your passions are not distractions. They may be the map.
So honour them. Explore them. Give them time. Let them speak to one another.
Because sometimes, the life you are meant to live is not built from one passion alone.
Sometimes, it is built from all the parts of you finally coming together.
