Asia Live: When Culture, Community, and Creativity Take Over Haymarket

From 3–19 April 2026, Haymarket will transform into one of Sydney’s most vibrant cultural playgrounds as Asia Live lights up the precinct with colour, sound, flavour, and creativity.

Presented by City of Sydney, Asia Live is a 16-day celebration of Asian culture and community, designed to activate Haymarket, increase foot traffic, and showcase the rich cultural, culinary, retail, and artistic experiences that make this precinct so special

At the heart of this large-scale festival is a powerful idea: culture is not something to observe from a distance — it is something to experience, participate in, and support. This is where ArtSHINE proudly steps in.

A Festival That Goes Beyond Celebration

Asia Live is not just an event. It is a festival experience and economic development program, created to strengthen community inclusion while supporting local businesses, artists, and creatives.

Across Dixon Street, Little Hay Street, shopping centres, galleries, cafés, and public spaces, visitors will encounter six major programs:

Creative installations

Cultural performances

Food and culinary activations

Retail and “Spend & Win” experiences

Art pop-ups and exhibitions

Music activations across venues

Together, these programs invite people to stay longer, explore deeper, and connect more meaningfully with Haymarket

ArtSHINE’s Role: Curating Art That Lives in the Community

ArtSHINE’s involvement in Asia Live sits within ART LIVE, the festival’s 16-day art activation program.

Rather than treating art as something confined to a gallery wall, ArtSHINE curates art that lives within everyday spaces — shopping centres, public walkways, pop-up venues, and community hubs. This approach allows art to meet people where they already are.

Through curated exhibitions, live art demonstrations, and creative workshops, ArtSHINE brings together:

Emerging and established artists

Traditional and contemporary practices

Storytelling through visual culture

Hands-on creative experiences for the public

This model supports artists not just through exposure, but through real opportunities to connect with audiences, collectors, and new markets

Art Meets Market: Creating Opportunities for Artists and Businesses

One of the most exciting aspects of Asia Live is how art, culture, and commerce work together.

ArtSHINE’s curated art pop-ups align closely with the festival’s broader goals:

Driving foot traffic into Haymarket

Supporting local retailers and venues

Encouraging visitors to explore beyond one destination

Turning cultural engagement into economic impact

By placing art within shopping and commercial centres, ArtSHINE helps create natural moments of discovery — where someone might come for food, stay for culture, and leave with a deeper connection to the place.

For artists, this means:

Greater visibility beyond traditional art audiences

Opportunities to sell work or gain commissions

Real-world exposure in high-traffic locations

Engagement with a culturally diverse audience

For businesses, it means:

Increased dwell time

A richer visitor experience

Strong alignment with a major City of Sydney-backed event

This balance between creativity and commerce is central to ArtSHINE’s mission — and Asia Live is the perfect platform to demonstrate it.

Culture as a Shared Experience

Asia Live is built on the belief that culture strengthens communities.

Large-scale installations like The Sanctuary invite visitors to walk through symbolic representations of Asian heritage, while opening and closing ceremonies on the Super Stage encourage people to dress in cultural attire, celebrate identity, and participate together

ArtSHINE’s curatorial approach mirrors this spirit. Art is not presented as exclusive or intimidating. Instead, it is open, welcoming, and deeply human — reflecting stories of heritage, migration, memory, and modern Asian-Australian identity.

Why Asia Live Matters

Events like Asia Live do more than entertain. They:

Support local economies

Create platforms for artists and creatives

Encourage cultural understanding

Strengthen community pride

Activate public spaces in meaningful ways

With strong partners, experienced producers, and thoughtful creative curation, Asia Live positions Haymarket as a cultural destination, not just during the festival, but long after it ends

Looking Ahead

As Asia Live returns in April 2026, ArtSHINE is proud to be part of a festival that understands the power of art when it is shared, accessible, and connected to community life.

From curated art pop-ups to creative markets and live demonstrations, ArtSHINE’s involvement ensures that artists are not just seen — they are supported, valued, and given space to shine.

Asia Live is where culture comes alive.
ArtSHINE is where artists meet opportunity.
